Subversive Surfaces: Taboo and Fragility
June 09, 2018 @ 10:00 AM
In this unique exhibition, Gina Baum and Lou Baker challenge modern perceptions of the human body. Through porcelain and textiles, we are confronted with reminders of the fragile boundaries between the interior and exterior, and the uncomfortable taboos associated with the perceived private body.
Gina Baum’s healthcare background is the driving force behind her delicate porcelain sculptures. With incredibly fragile, skin-like surfaces, Baum’s work addresses the indignity and taboo attached to ill health in a modern world.
Lou Baker challenges traditional textile processes to create soft sculptures and knitted forms. These personal, confessional works simultaneously attract and repulse as they walk the line between horror and hilarity.
